The 1000 Kip series issued under this reference spans a transitional window for Laos — the early 1990s saw the country deepening its shift away from Soviet-style central planning following the Chính Sách Chin Thanakaan Mai economic reforms, and the banknote supply needed to keep pace with a monetizing rural economy that had previously operated largely outside the formal banking system.
A watermark-only security specification was already modest by regional standards at the time of issue. Neighboring states were moving toward security threads and UV-reactive inks through the same period.
