Ukraine's highest-denomination note in active circulation, the 1000 hryvnia was introduced in 2019 — the first new denomination added to the series since the hryvnia's relaunch in the 1990s. Its introduction was partly a response to cumulative inflation eroding the practical utility of smaller notes, the 500 hryvnia having been the ceiling for over two decades.

Printed entirely in-house at the NBU's own facility in Kyiv, the series reflects a deliberate policy of domestic production independence that the bank has maintained since the early 2000s. Notes dated through 2023 remain legal tender despite the wartime disruption to normal banking operations following Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
