Suriname's monetary situation in the early 1990s was deteriorating sharply — inflation ran into triple digits by 1994, driven largely by government deficit spending and the collapse of the official exchange rate. The 1000 Gulden was among the highest denominations available at issue, yet its purchasing power eroded so quickly that it became almost immediately inadequate for everyday transactions. By 1999, the country had introduced the Surinamese Dollar to replace the Gulden at a rate of 1000:1, which tells you everything about where this note ended up in real terms.
