| Description du revers | Multicolour reverse with an intricate guilloche underprint in green, red, and purple tones. Two large intaglio-engraved Balinese lion (singa) sculptures on ornate pedestals flank a central circular watermark window surmounted by a finely detailed Javanese ceremonial vessel. Anti-counterfeiting legal warnings are printed in four languages — Dutch, Javanese (in Javanese script), Chinese, and Malay (in Jawi script) — in the panels between the sculptures, with the denomination numeral "1000" and the bank name "DE JAVASCHE BANK" and "DUIZEND GULDEN" inscribed along the lower margin. |

De Javasche Bank was the colonial central bank of the Netherlands East Indies, and by 1938 it was printing high-denomination notes in Haarlem for circulation across an archipelago on the edge of catastrophe. Within three years of this note's issue, the Japanese occupation would render the entire prewar DEI currency system obsolete — occupation guilders replaced Dutch colonial paper, and much of the existing stock was destroyed, surrendered, or hidden.
Carel Adolph Lion Cachet's involvement is worth noting. A Dutch artist of genuine standing, his design work for Enschedé brought an aesthetic seriousness to this series that was unusual for colonial paper. The 1000 Gulden denomination was never a note ordinary people handled — at that value, it moved between institutions, not pockets.
