Obverse description Brown on red underprint; the note is enclosed within an elaborate arabesque and volute engraved border, with the Coat of Arms of Suriname — a medallion with a sailing vessel flanked by two indigenous figures and surmounted by a ribbon bearing the motto "Justitia Pietas Fides" — positioned at top centre. The bank title, bearer clause, and date "PARAMARIBO, 15 FEBRUARI 1904" are set in the centre field, with the denomination "DUIZEND GULDEN" in large letterpress type above a lower vignette illustrating the first European contact in Suriname, with figures exchanging goods on a shoreline and a sailing vessel at anchor in the bay; the numeral "1000" appears in each corner, and two manuscript signatures of the Director-Secretary and Director-President are placed at the foot.
