1000 Guilders Olympics 1992 - Silver

Suriname issued both silver and base-metal versions of this Olympics commemorative, the silver striking intended primarily for the collector export market rather than domestic circulation. The country had virtually no tradition of silver coinage in everyday use by this point, and the Centrale Bank was deliberately leveraging international numismatic demand to generate hard currency — a common strategy among smaller nations during the commemorative boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
