1000 Guilders Olympics 1992, Cupronickel

Suriname issued this piece for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, one of dozens of small nations that struck commemorative coinage for the Games primarily as a foreign-exchange revenue exercise rather than out of any meaningful athletic tradition. Suriname sent a small delegation to Barcelona — as it had to several prior Games — but the country had no realistic medal prospects, and the issue was directed squarely at the collector market.

KM#48 in copper-nickel is the more modest of what was typically a paired or tiered release strategy, with silver or gold companion pieces carrying the real premium.
