| Additional information |
Paraguay introduced bimetallic and higher-denomination coinage in the 2000s partly in response to decades of guaraní devaluation that had rendered smaller coins economically meaningless — by the time this piece entered circulation, the 1,000 guaraní unit was worth roughly twenty U.S. cents. The Banco Central had already redenominated once in 1944, converting pesos to guaraníes at 100:1, and chronic inflation meant the currency's purchasing power never fully recovered.
The nickel-steel composition was chosen for durability and cost control across what became a remarkably long production run spanning nearly two decades.
