Benin's participation in the commemorative coin market has always been opportunistic — the country fields virtually no numismatic tradition of its own and licenses its issuing authority to European minting houses, primarily the Kremnica mint in Slovakia and various Belgian and French producers. This piece, issued a full 68 years after the 1934 tournament, belongs to a wave of FIFA-licensed silver releases that flooded the market in the lead-up to the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup.
The 1934 tournament itself was staged under Mussolini's direct supervision, with the Italian Football Federation pressured to ensure a home victory. Referee assignments were manipulated, and several visiting teams reported intimidation. Italy won.
