Beschrijving voorzijde Elaborate intaglio vignette after designs engraved by Jacques-Jean Barre, with allegorical figures representing the Arts and Sciences at left and Trade and Agriculture at right, each grouping supported by a squatting Hercules figure. A central medallion at the top is flanked by two female figures accompanied by a child resting on a lion, while at the base, personifications of Law and Justice — inspired by the bas-relief at the entrance of the Banque de France — rest upon a console surmounted by the Gallic rooster. The composition is enclosed within an ornate framing border with manuscript date, register notations, and a full legal warning against counterfeiting in letterpress.

Opmerkingen

The type 1842 definitive was the Banque de France's first genuinely standardized high-denomination note, issued as the bank consolidated its provincial network following the 1848 revolution and the turbulent interregnum of the Second Republic. Jacques-Jean Barre — better known as chief engraver at the Paris Mint — brought exceptional intaglio discipline to the plate work, a relative rarity for French paper of this period.

Surviving examples from the early 1842–1848 portion of the run are markedly scarcer than post-1848 issues. The sixteen-year production window was not continuous revision but a single sustained type held in service through two regime changes.
