The Shroud of Turin has no documented connection to Central Africa, and the Bank of Central African States — which issues currency on behalf of Cameroon, Chad, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — has no jurisdictional or historical relationship with the relic. This coin belongs to a category of thematic collector issues produced in the late 2000s and early 2010s, in which African monetary authorities licensed their minting rights to European distributors targeting the Catholic devotional market.
