The "Revolver" nickname comes from the cylinder-shaped rotating mechanism built into the coin itself — a functional spinning chamber, typically housing multiple miniature inset pieces, that replicates the action of a revolver's cylinder. BEAC has issued a series of these mechanical novelty coins since the mid-2010s, contracting production to European private mints serving the collectibles market rather than any circulating monetary need.

The Central African franc zone, of which BEAC is the issuing authority, operates under a fixed parity with the euro inherited from the old franc CFA arrangement codified in 1972. These collector issues are legal tender in name only — denominated far below their bullion and novelty value, never intended for the cash economy of the six member states.
