| Beschrijving keerzijde | A detailed effigy of Pope John Paul II dominates the field, depicted in three-quarter facing bust wearing papal vestments and a mitre, his right hand raised in the traditional apostolic blessing and his left hand holding a papal ferula with a crucifix. The legend ST. JOHN PAUL II CANONIZATION arcs along the upper periphery, while the canonization date 27.04.2014 curves along the right side. The fine inscription 1 Oz. Ag .9999, indicating the coin's silver content, appears in small letters to the lower right of the effigy. The proof striking provides a mirror-like background that accentuates the finely detailed sculptural portrait. |

Niger issued this coin as part of a broader wave of African nation papal commemoratives that flooded the market in the early 2010s, most struck under licensing arrangements with European minting houses rather than produced by any domestic facility. Niger has no mint of its own.
John Paul II had been canonized just weeks before this coin's release date — April 27, 2014 — making the timing commercially deliberate. The Vatican had no involvement in its authorization.
