Mount Pinatubo's 1991 eruption in the Philippines was the second-largest volcanic eruption of the twentieth century, ejecting roughly ten cubic kilometers of material and temporarily lowering global temperatures by about 0.5°C through stratospheric sulfur dioxide injection. Cameroon's connection to it is purely commercial — this is a bullion-adjacent novelty piece issued under the now-familiar arrangement where small African nations license their minting authority to European dealers, in this case to generate a collectible rather than circulating currency.
