The obverse displays the national coat of arms of the Republic of Dahomey at center, featuring a quartered shield supported by two leopards rampant, surmounted by a buffalo head, with a scroll below bearing the national motto FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL. The denomination 1.000 FRANCS CFA appears in large lettering in the lower field. The circumferential legend reads REPUBLIQUE DU DAHOMEY, flanked by the date 1971 at the top, and the commemorative inscriptions 1er Août 1970 and 10ème Anniversaire along the left and right margins respectively. The coin is struck in proof quality with a deeply mirrored field, and a beaded border encircles the entire design. |

Dahomey issued this coin — along with a small suite of other commemorative pieces — to mark the tenth anniversary of independence from France, achieved in August 1960. The republic had a turbulent first decade: five coups in ten years, the last of which in December 1969 had installed a three-man Presidential Council just two years before this coin was struck. Dahomey became the People's Republic of Benin in 1975, meaning the issuing state ceased to exist within four years of mintage.
