Guinea's central bank has issued a long-running series of small-format gold pieces bearing portraits of foreign heads of state and dignitaries, marketed almost exclusively to collectors in Europe and North America rather than circulating domestically. Steinmeier assumed the German presidency in March 2017, making this issue a near-simultaneous commemorative. These pieces are produced under license arrangements common among several West African nations whose nominal face values bear no relationship to any real monetary function.
