Additional information

The BEAC issues commemorative coinage on behalf of its six member states — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo — under a monetary union arrangement that dates to the CFA franc zone restructuring of 1972. These coins are legal tender within that framework but are struck exclusively for the collector market, exported almost entirely to Europe and Asia, and never circulate within the issuing states.

The French Bulldog belongs to a broad series of bimetallic novelty issues produced for BEAC by European minting contractors, trading on collector demand for the format rather than any connection between the subject and Central Africa.
