Benin's numismatic program from this period was operated almost entirely by the Paris-based Monnaie de Paris and marketed through European distributors — the coins were never intended for circulation and most Beninese citizens never encountered them. The Zeppelin theme had no particular connection to Beninese history; it was chosen for its proven collector appeal in the German and Japanese markets, where airship nostalgia reliably drove sales.
Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin flew his first successful rigid airship over Lake Constance in July 1900, the same centenary this coin marks.
