Obverse description The coat of arms of the Republic of Benin occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield supported by two leopards rampant, surmounted by a star above a decorative crest. The shield's quarters display a castle tower, a sailing ship, palm trees, and traditional symbols respectively. A ribbon below the shield bears the national motto in Latin script: FRATERNITE JUSTICE TRAVAIL. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN arcs along the upper portion of the oval field, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA is inscribed in two lines across the lower field. The entire design is framed by a fine beaded border following the oval perimeter.
