Walther von der Vogelweide was a Middle High German lyric poet active around 1170–1230, considered the foremost Minnesänger of the medieval German-speaking world. His connection to Benin is nonexistent — this is a bullion and collector issue produced under the West African CFA franc monetary union purely for the European numismatic market. Benin has issued dozens of such thematic coins since the 1990s, most bearing subjects with no relationship to the country whatsoever.
The CFA franc itself has been pegged to the euro since 1999, previously to the French franc at a fixed rate since 1948.
