Gabon's series of art-themed issues from this period were produced under the BEAC (Banque des États de l'Afrique Centrale) framework but targeted exclusively at the international collector market — no serious expectation of circulation. This particular piece references Van Gogh's 1888 painting made in Arles while the artist was awaiting Gauguin's arrival, a stay that would end with the infamous ear incident in December of that year.
