The dwarf forest buffalo (*Syncerus caffer nanus*) is the smallest of the African buffalo subspecies, confined to the dense rainforests of Central and West Africa — including the Republic of the Congo itself, making this an unusually appropriate pairing of issuer and subject. Congo's wildlife-themed coinage program of the late 2000s was part of a broader wave of small-nation collector issues produced largely for the European numismatic market, with minimal circulation intent and virtually no domestic distribution.
