To the right, a classical female figure rendered in the style of antique Greek statuary stands in full relief, evoking the tradition of Olympic ideals. The legend XXVII OLYMPIADE arcs along the upper periphery, with SYDNEY and 2000 inscribed prominently in the upper field. The minting year 1999 appears in the exergue.

Additional information

Benin's Olympic-themed coinage from the late 1990s falls squarely within the wave of CFA franc collector issues that flooded the market during that decade, most produced under licensing arrangements with European minting houses rather than through any meaningful domestic monetary infrastructure. The 2000 Sydney Games prompted dozens of small-denomination sovereign issuers to enter the collector market, and Benin was among the more prolific.

These pieces saw no meaningful circulation. Struck for the collector trade from the outset.
