The Republic of the Congo's wildlife coinage series of the 1990s was produced almost entirely for the collector export market — the country had no meaningful domestic numismatic collecting base and virtually none of these pieces circulated. The crowned crane issues were struck by European contract mints and sold primarily through dealer networks in France and Germany, making them financial instruments dressed as commemoratives more than anything else.
KM#63 is one of several fauna-themed issues from this issuer clustered around 1997, a period when the country was sliding toward the civil war that would erupt that same year under Sassou Nguesso.
