Gabon's CFA franc membership has long created an odd numismatic situation: as a member of the BEAC zone, the country has no independent monetary authority and issues no circulating coinage of its own. These collector pieces are authorized through a separate legal framework that allows member states to license commemorative issues without BEAC involvement — a technicality that has made Gabon one of the more prolific sources of modern silver collector coins despite having no functioning national mint.
San Pietro refers to St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. The selective gilding on issues of this type is typically applied by the contracted private mint, most commonly a European secondary producer working under license.
