Beschrijving keerzijde A finely detailed naturalistic depiction of the golden-rumped elephant shrew (Rhynchocyon chrysopygus) occupies the central field, shown in profile amid low scrub vegetation and rocks, conveying a sense of natural habitat. The legend LE MONDE ANIMAL EN PERIL arcs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, and the scientific name RHYNCHOCYON CHRYSOPYGUS is inscribed along the lower periphery. The date 2006 appears in the right field. The reverse is struck to proof quality with deeply mirrored fields and sharply frosted wildlife relief.

Aanvullende informatie

The golden-rumped sengi — Rhynchocyon chrysopygus — is endemic to the coastal forests of Kenya, not West Africa. Ivory Coast had no ecological or political claim to the animal whatsoever. This coin belongs to a wave of Ivorian collector issues from the mid-2000s that systematically mined global biodiversity for subject matter, issued under licensing arrangements common to small-denomination CFA states seeking hard currency from the numismatic market rather than from circulation.

The series was never intended for use as money. KM#19 is a pure exonumia play.
