| Beschrijving voorzijde | The national coat of arms of the Republic of the Congo occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with a rampant lion, supported on either side by African elephants standing on a decorative plinth. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown. A scroll beneath the supporters bears the national motto in three parts: UNITE, TRAVAIL, and PROGRES. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU CONGO arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA is inscribed in large characters along the lower periphery. The entire design is rendered in antique finish, imparting a dark patinated appearance to the relief elements. |

The Republic of the Congo — not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo across the river — has issued a steady stream of wildlife-themed bullion and collector pieces since the early 2000s, largely through arrangements with European minting agencies targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation. These pieces never see Brazzaville.
The black rhinoceros population in the Congo Basin had effectively collapsed by the 1990s, with poaching pressure and habitat loss driving regional extinction across much of central Africa. Whether that irony was intentional is unclear.
