Obverse description The national coat of arms of the Republic of Benin occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing in the upper-left quarter a castle, in the upper-right a six-pointed star, in the lower-left a palm tree, and in the lower-right a sailing vessel, surmounted by an oil palm tree. Two lions rampant serve as supporters on either side of the shield, and a bovine head with sweeping horns appears as the crest above. A scroll beneath the shield bears the national motto in three parts: FRATERNITE, JUSTICE, TRAVAIL. The legend REPUBLIQUE DU BENIN arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 FRANCS CFA is inscribed in the lower field.
