| 裏面の説明 | The reverse presents a finely detailed high-relief depiction of a mother hippopotamus with her young calf, shown in a naturalistic composition set against a textured ground suggestive of riverbank terrain. The adult hippo dominates the upper and central field, its massive head lowered toward the smaller calf standing at right. The legend HIPPO SILVER OUNCE 2013 is inscribed along the upper left field. To the lower left, a small outline map of the African continent is shown within a cartouche bearing the inscriptions AFRICA, 1oz Ag, and .999, confirming the bullion specification of the piece. |

The Bank of Central African States issues commemorative coinage on behalf of its six member nations — Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — none of which maintain independent minting facilities. This piece was struck by a European contractor, almost certainly B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt in Munich, which produced the majority of BEAC's silver commemorative program during this period.
The hippopotamus has been extirpated from much of its former Central African range, with viable populations now largely confined to protected zones along the Congo River basin.
