The BCEAO issues commemorative silver outside its normal fiduciary mandate through licensing arrangements with European minting firms — this piece was almost certainly produced by a private mint for the collector market rather than struck for circulation in the eight member states. The hieroglyphs theme has no particular connection to West African monetary history or to the BCEAO's member economies, which is a recurring pattern in this series: the issuing authority lends its name to coins designed entirely for international numismatic sales.
