The Republic of the Congo — not to be confused with the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo — issued this piece under the CFA franc zone arrangements that allow member states to produce commemorative coinage largely as a revenue exercise aimed at foreign collectors rather than domestic circulation. France hosted the 1998 tournament, the first expanded to 32 teams, and the surrounding commemorative market was saturated by dozens of issuing authorities with tenuous connections to the event.
KM#57 saw no meaningful circulation in Brazzaville.
