The "English Knight" belongs to a series of medieval warrior issues struck for Benin under the République du Bénin authority — a country with no medieval European history of its own, producing these coins purely as numismatic collectibles for the international market. Benin adopted the CFA franc in 1945 and has never circulated commemorative silver of this type domestically.
KM#109 was struck at a European private mint on contract, a common arrangement for West African CFA-zone nations whose commemorative programs are designed, marketed, and distributed almost entirely outside their borders.
