David Livingstone died in May 1873 in Chief Chitambo's village in present-day Zambia, far outside the territories that would eventually fall under French Equatorial Africa — making his appearance on a CFA franc issue a geographical stretch at best. These silver rounds were produced for the collector market in the 1990s, when the Bank of Central African States issued a series of commemorative pieces with little connection to regional history. Livingstone's attendants removed his heart and buried it beneath a mvula tree before carrying his preserved body to the coast — a journey of nine months.
