The zebra duiker (*Cephalophus zebra*) is endemic to the upper Guinea forests of West Africa — including Ivory Coast — and has been listed as vulnerable since population surveys in the 1990s revealed accelerating habitat loss. Ivory Coast's wildlife coin program of the 2000s drew on IUCN red-list species with direct geographic ties to the issuing country, making this selection less arbitrary than most fauna issues from the period.
Struck for the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest under the CFA franc framework, the coin carries nominal legal tender status in a currency zone where actual policy is set in Paris.
