Above the monkey in the upper field, the Chinese character 福 (fortune/luck) is prominently displayed. To the lower left of the monkey, a diamond-shaped cartouche contains additional Chinese characters. Chinese characters arcing around the upper border read 甲申猴年歲次農曆 (Year of the Jiashen Monkey in the lunar calendar). The date in Chinese numerals 西元二〇〇四年 (Year 2004) appears along the lower border, while the inscriptions 999 SILVER and 1 OUNCE flank the central design on the left and right respectively, separated from the border by a beaded dotted ring. Two floral rosettes accent the outer field. |

Togo's authority to issue commemorative coinage is delegated through the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, which means these pieces are struck on behalf of a member state with no independent central bank of its own. The practical result is a flood of themed wildlife issues from the early 2000s with limited connection to Togolese fauna or policy — the baboon has no particular national significance to Togo.
KM#34 was produced by a private mint for the collector market and almost certainly never circulated.
