Alexander Selkirk was marooned on Más a Tierra in the South Pacific in 1704 after a dispute with his captain, spending four years and four months alone before rescue — the experience that gave Daniel Defoe his template for Robinson Crusoe. Burkina Faso has no maritime history and no connection to Selkirk whatsoever; the coin exists purely within the prolific trade-coin industry that licenses exotic issuing authorities to produce silver collectibles for the European and North American numismatic market.
Más a Tierra was renamed Robinson Crusoe Island by the Chilean government in 1966, specifically to attract tourism.
