The "Smick Edition" branding refers to a short-lived series of ultra-high-relief miniature silver coins marketed heavily through European telemarketing and home-shopping channels around 2013–2015. Gabon's participation was purely contractual — the Central African CFA franc issuing authority, the BEAC, had limited oversight of these licensed collector issues, which were produced by private minting houses and sold well above any intrinsic value. The springbok, native to southern Africa, has no particular connection to Gabon.
