Madagascar's dual-denomination system — francs for legal tender purposes, ariary as the traditional counting unit (1 ariary = 5 francs) — predates independence and was formally retained after 1960 partly to ease rural commerce where ariary remained the practical currency of daily exchange. Both values appear on notes of this series precisely because the two systems coexisted in actual use, not as a formality.
Thomas De La Rue produced this series across a six-year window, with no mid-series design revision despite the extended print run. The single watermark is the sole mechanical security feature — relatively spare for a De La Rue production of this period.
