The Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer was the common issuing authority for French overseas territories across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific — a single institution serving radically different economies simultaneously. By 1960, that arrangement was unraveling fast. Most of French sub-Saharan Africa gained independence that year, and the CCFOM was in the process of being superseded by successor institutions like the BCEAO and BEAC.
