The Banque de France produced this series on behalf of the Banque de l'Algérie throughout a period of deepening political crisis — the note was still being signed and issued after November 1954, when the armed insurrection that would eventually end French Algeria had already begun. That the same design ran continuously from 1949 through 1958 reflects institutional inertia as much as anything else; the administration changed signature combinations three times without ever revising the plate.
Marliat and Broutin were both established Banque de France engravers, and Fel contributed designs to multiple French colonial issues of the period. The three-signature authentication system — governor, secretary-general, and a third officer — was standard for the Algérie series and accounts for the distinct signature varieties now collected separately under P#107.
