The Banque de l'Algérie, though nominally an Algerian institution, operated firmly under French metropolitan authority — its notes were printed in Paris and its monetary policy was set accordingly. This 1000 Franc denomination was the highest face value in circulation at the time of issue, placing it squarely in the hands of commercial transactions rather than everyday retail use, which means genuinely circulated examples show heavy handling.
Léon Carré was primarily known as a painter and illustrator of Orientalist subjects, and his involvement in banknote design for Algeria was a deliberate aesthetic choice by the bank's administration, not a standard engraving commission.
