| 表面の説明 | The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Equatorial Guinea at center, featuring a silk-cotton tree (God tree) on a shield, flanked by two sprigs and surmounted by a arc of six stars. A ribbon below the shield bears the national motto in three parts: UNIDAD, PAZ, and JUSTICIA. The date 1996 is divided on either side of the shield, with 19 to the left and 96 to the right. The legend REPUBLICA DE GUINEA ECUATORIAL arcs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 1000 FRANCOS appears in bold lettering along the lower periphery. The design is executed in a sharp proof relief against a polished field. |

Equatorial Guinea has a long history of issuing coins with little connection to domestic circulation — many produced specifically for the collector market through arrangements with foreign minting agencies. This 1000 Francos CFA piece featuring Swiss circus entrepreneur Rolf Knie falls squarely into that category. The Knie family circus, founded in 1803, became a Swiss national institution, but its appearance on an Equatoguinean coin reflects nothing more than a licensing arrangement brokered through a coin dealer intermediary in the 1990s.
Equatorial Guinea adopted the CFA franc zone in 1985 after abandoning the ekwele.
