This note was issued to mark the millennial anniversary of the Hungarian state — specifically the year 1000 AD, when István I (Stephen I) received his crown from Pope Sylvester II, an event treated in Hungary as the founding moment of Christian kingship and statehood. Magyar Pénzjegynyomda has printed the bulk of Hungarian domestic currency since the interwar period, and this commemorative issue stayed entirely in-house. Vagyóczky handled both design and obverse engraving, an arrangement less common than splitting those roles.
