Reverse description The reverse presents a detailed architectural representation of the historic Abbey of Cluny, rendered with fine engraving in an ornate cartouche or scroll-work surround. Along the upper edge of the scroll, the commemorative legend records the 1,100th anniversary of the abbey's founding and the issuing authority. The denomination '1000 EURO' appears prominently below the architectural vignette. The overall composition reflects the monumental Romanesque heritage of Cluny, one of the most significant ecclesiastical complexes of medieval Europe.

Additional information

Cluny Abbey, once the largest church in Christendom until St. Peter's Basilica surpassed it in the 16th century, was systematically demolished following the French Revolution — the stone sold off as building material by local contractors over several decades. By the time preservation efforts began in the 19th century, most of it was gone. This issue belongs to the Monnaie de Paris's ongoing series commemorating destroyed or threatened French architectural heritage, a program that has produced some of the heaviest bullion pieces in modern French minting.
