The Treaty of Tordesillas, signed in June 1494 between Portugal and Castile, divided the newly "discovered" world along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands — a line drawn before either power had any reliable cartography of what lay east or west of it. Brazil falling on the Portuguese side was almost certainly an accident of geography rather than diplomatic foresight. This proof issue marks the treaty's 500th anniversary.
The Gomes reference distinguishes this from the business strike R 155.01, with the .02 suffix designating the proof finish produced specifically for collectors.
