The Treaty of Tordesilhas, signed in 1494 between Portugal and Castile, divided the non-European world along a meridian 370 leagues west of the Cape Verde Islands — making this archipelago the literal geographic reference point from which the colonial partition of the globe was measured. The 500th anniversary commemorative program prompted several Portuguese-speaking nations to issue collector pieces marking the occasion.
KM#26 was struck by the Casa da Moeda in Lisbon on behalf of Banco de Cabo Verde. Mintage for the series was tightly limited, and Cape Verde's issues from this period rarely circulated domestically.
