The Revolução dos Cravos of April 25, 1974 ended 48 years of Estado Novo dictatorship in a military coup so bloodless that soldiers famously accepted carnations placed in their rifle barrels by Lisbon civilians — hence the name. This 1999 issue marks the 25th anniversary of that event, released in the final year of the Portuguese escudo before euro adoption rendered the denomination obsolete.
The .500 fineness is characteristic of INCM's commemorative output from this period, chosen to keep production costs down on issues with modest collector premiums.
