Obverse description The Portuguese arms — a crowned shield bearing five escutcheons in saltire, each charged with five bezants, and bordure of seven castles — is displayed centrally within a raised inner circle. Surrounding the central device, arranged in a ring across the broad flat field, are eleven heraldic shields and coat-of-arms emblems representing Lusophone and associated nations, referencing Portugal's historical ties. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs across the upper portion of the inner band, while the denomination 1000 ESC. appears along the lower portion of the same band.
