| Obverse description | The Portuguese national coat of arms is depicted at centre, rendered in fine detail with the traditional shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a cross and bordered by seven castles. The arms are surrounded by an ornate decorative field filled with an intricate interlocking pattern of stylised floral and foliate motifs, evoking Manueline decorative traditions. The curved legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs across the upper field, with the commemorative dates 1646 and 1996 flanking the design on either side. The denomination 1000$00 appears in bold relief along the lower rim. |
