The Liga dos Combatentes was founded in 1923 to support veterans of Portugal's First World War campaigns, particularly those who fought in the African theatres and on the Western Front at the Battle of La Lys in 1918. This 1998 issue marks the organization's 75th anniversary. Half-silver at 27 grams places it firmly in the lower tier of Portuguese commemorative coinage from this period — Banco de Portugal was already beginning the shift away from higher fineness that had characterized earlier escudo-era issues.
